Professor Felix Ritchie and Dr Van Phan, on behalf of the Wage and Employment Dynamics (WED) team, were delighted to present at the special session “New Developments in Labour Market Data” at the 2025 Royal Economic Society (RES) Annual Conference in Birmingham this month.
Their presentation focused on two major data linkages: ASHE-HMRC (PAYE and Self-Assessment) and ASHE-MWS (Migrant Workers Scan). These linked datasets offer new insights into the structure and dynamics of the UK labour market.

The session concluded with a panel discussion featuring Rosie French (ADR UK), Christina Palmou (OECD, ONS), and chaired by Professor Rebecca Riley (King’s College London). The discussion explored the persistent challenges of linking administrative datasets and the importance of developing data infrastructure to support innovative research and inform evidence-based policymaking.
A key takeaway from the discussion was that delivering high-quality linked data as a public good requires long-term commitment, cross-sector collaboration, and sustained investment in infrastructure, skilled people, and governance.
